Morning Arrival Notes
Students are not to be dropped off prior to 7:57 AM and must be supervised by a parent or guardian until then
Students are considered tardy after 8:10 AM
Upon arriving at school prior to 7:57 AM please do not pass the stop sign until called forward by a school staff member
Buses and staff may pass vehicles waiting to enter so please stay to the right as far as possible
Buses will turn left towards the bus loop
Once parent drop-off vehicles are called forward they will travel in a single line to the right around the entire staff parking lot
Students should be dropped off out of the right side of the vehicle only
NO PASSING is allowed
Afternoon Dismissal Notes
Upon arriving to school prior to 2:28 PM please do not pass the top of the hill until 2:25 PM
Please stay to the right to allow buses to pass
Buses will turn left towards the bus loop
Once parent pick-up vehicles are called forward they will travel in a single line around the entire staff parking lot
Vehicles will be directed to the parent pick-up area by a school staff member
Students should enter the vehicle on the right side only

4th Grade
Welcome back to a fantastic new school year! We are especially excited to welcome our rising fourth graders as they step into an encouraging year of growth and new routines. For many fourth graders, they will be experiencing a departmentalized schedule with a switch class, where students will transition between teachers for different subjects. This is a great step toward building independence, responsibility, and confidence.
To help your student be prepared for the first day of school, please send your fourth grader with their supplies, a backpack, and a daily snack! To stay connected and up to date on classroom specifics, schedules, and individual teacher announcements, please check ParentSquare regularly. Our teachers will be posting vital updates there throughout the year, making it your best hub for all class news. We look forward to seeing all of our students on Wednesday, September 2nd!

Attendance Reminders
Welcome to a new school year filled with opportunities to learn and grow! Let’s work together to make the most of the school year by helping our young people show up and participate every day possible.
School begins at Shaw at 7:57. Please build morning routines at home to make on-time arrival possible and smooth for your child.
What you can do
Set a regular bedtime and morning routine.
Lay out clothes and pack backpacks the night before.
Keep your child healthy and make sure they have the required shots.
Develop backup plans for getting to school if something comes up.
Monitor your child’s absences.
Try to schedule nonurgent medical appointments and extended trips when school isn’t in session.
If your child seems anxious about going to school, talk to teachers, school counselors and other parents for advice on how to make your child feel comfortable and excited about learning.
If you are concerned that your child may have a contagious illness, call your school nurse or health-care provider for advice. Ask the teacher for ideas to support missed learning time.
Getting back into the habit of daily attendance matters. If we can support you in any way to help your child get to school, please let us know.

As we prepare for an exciting upcoming school year, we want to share our newly structured 6th-grade daily schedule. The 6th grade schedule is organized into 8 periods.
While every 6th grader shares the exact same period times, recess/lunch block, and morning Unified Arts and What I Need (WIN) periods, their core academic classes are scheduled at different times. In other words, each student will take the same courses, just in a different order. Depending on their specific schedule, all students will see 3 or 4 teachers throughout the day.
This new schedule more closely models the Jr/Sr High schedule they will experience next year. This is another way we support your child's growth and preparedness.

Highlights of the New Schedule:
A departmentalized schedule to foster organizational skills, independence, and flexibility—vital tools as students prepare for the Jr./Sr. High School.
All 6th graders will have recess and lunch together during Period 5, providing a great opportunity to socialize across different sections.
Every student starts their day together at 8:20 AM with Unified Arts, then WIN for targeted academic support.
Every student receives a comprehensive curriculum including Math, English Language Arts, Science, Social Studies, and PLTW (Project Lead The Way) STEM instruction.
Nature's Classroom Informational Meeting - Save The Date!

This year’s Nature's Classroom Informational Meeting will be held on Thursday, September 10 from 6 PM to 6:45 PM in the Shaw cafeteria. Both guardians and students are welcome. A representative from Nature's Classroom will also be there.
Forms and payment are currently being accepted and are available in Shaw's main office.

School Council Representation
Below you will find a brief overview of what the School Council is and represents. We encourage all stakeholders to participate in the School Council as it offers multiple perspectives into the happenings of a school building and community as well as shared responsibilities in progressing the school forward. If you are interested in participating on the school council, please send a letter of intent email to the school administrative assistant, Mrs. Kim Persson, at kpersson@millburyschools.org.
School Council Overview
The Law:
A school council is a representative; school building-based committee composed of the principal, parents, teachers, community members and, at the secondary level, students, required to be established by each school pursuant to Massachusetts General Laws Chapter 71, Section 59C.
Council Membership:
The principal is responsible for establishing the membership of the School Council “pursuant to a representative process approved by the superintendent and school committee,” and to define the size and composition of the council. The following stipulations were considered when the junior-senior high school council was established:
Parents “have parity with professional personnel on the school councils.”
“Not more than 50% percent of the council shall be non-school members.” Non-school members” are defined as members who are “other than parents, teachers, students, and staff at the school.”
The membership of the school councils “should be broadly representative of the school building and community.”

Birthday Book Cart
Do you want to help promote the love of reading for students at Shaw? This year at Shaw, we will once again have The Birthday Book Cart. Every day after a student has their birthday recognized during morning announcements, they will get to choose a book they WANT to read and keep from The Birthday Book Cart. If you would like to support The Birthday Book Cart, you can purchase a book from our Amazon Wish List, or please feel free to drop off new books or donations to purchase new books at the main office at any time.
